Big Day for Bargain Buys as five stores are opened in one day with help from local charities

It’s been a massive day for Bargain Buys today (23rd January) as we opened a whopping five new stores across the UK, bringing unbeatable bargains to thousands more eager shoppers.

With new store openings in Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Bradford, Stevenage and London, it was all systems go for our hard-working teams as they worked against the clock to ensure our stores were all looking fantastic and ready for the grand openings.

A children’s charity called One in a Million supported our store opening in Bradford, our new Stevenage store had the honour of teaming-up with Isabel Hospice, and Richard House Children’s Hospice came along to support us at the new London Bargain Buys.

They each had volunteers collecting funds and here at Bargain Buys we hope we’ve helped to raise awareness for the great causes they all support. Each charity was specially selected to be a part of this big day because of the place they hold in the heart of their local community.

Chris explained: “We were really thrilled that five such amazing charities agreed to attend our opening events today and I’d like to wholeheartedly thank them for their participation.

Bargain Buys opens its first new store of the year with support from Doncaster Foodbank

There were bustling crowds and smiling faces galore in Doncaster this morning (Friday, 16th January), as we opened our first new store of the year.

We were joined at the event by the Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones, and the Doncaster Foodbank, a charity set up to provide care packages to people living on the breadline. The store’s manager and area manager presented representatives of the charity with a selection of toiletries, cleaning products and groceries to show our support for their great cause.

Ms Jones was also kind enough to buy the Foodbank a basket full of Bargain Buys shopping to show her support and gratitude for all of their hard work in the local area.

Store manager Sarah Whiting said: “We’re so glad that the Mayor could join us for our opening event and that we were able to make such a substantial donation to the Doncaster Foodbank.

“The opening has been absolutely brilliant! We managed to attract a good flow of shoppers eager to make the most of our unbeatable savings and they certainly haven’t been left disappointed.”

Our latest Bargain Buys store is the first of 20 set to be opened in the next five months. It’s located in the lovely Frenchgate Shopping Centre and has the added bonus of having two entrances – one at each end of the shop. This gives it double the footfall and enables us to provide amazing bargains to even more people every day.

But don’t worry – we also have tills at each end of the store to make sure shoppers don’t get stuck in any tediously long queues!

Mayor Ros Jones officially opened the store at 10am with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and happily greeted our very first customers.

She commented: “Shops like Bargain Buys are really fantastic for the community of Doncaster.

“It’s great that the company is providing people with an affordable option so that they can save money on their everyday essentials.”

Of course we were also joined by our friendly superhero mascot, who entertained shoppers and delighted everyone he greeted.

The celebrations will continue throughout the weekend, so why not pop down to see all our great deals on all your favourite brands? If you’re not local to Doncaster, you can use our handy store finder to locate your nearest Bargain Buys – so no one needs to miss out on amazing savings!

It's a happy start to the New Year as Bargain Buys raises more than £60,000 for charity

The New Year has gotten off to a very happy start for Bargain Buys as we have totted up the total money raised so far for our partner charity Marie Curie Cancer Care.

With the help of our brilliant customers and staff, Bargain Buys has raised an impressive £64,128 since our partnership with the charity began just 18 months ago.

The money raised is equivalent to an amazing 3,206 hours of invaluable nursing care and we couldn‘t be more proud of the efforts of everyone involved in the fundraising.

Chris Edwards, managing director at Bargain Buys said: “We’re delighted to have raised so much money for our charity partner Marie Curie.

“It’s fantastic that we are able to use our network of stores and staff to help this very worthwhile cause and we’re looking forward to building on this figure in 2015.”

The funds raised will help Marie Curie provide more than 3,000 hours of free nursing care to terminally ill people across the UK.

The awe-inspiring Marie Curie nurses work hard to give people top-quality end of life care in hospices as well as in their own homes.

Marie Curie also provide emotional support to the relatives and carers of people with cancer, helping families get through what is often the toughest challenge they will ever face.

This is why, as a family-run company, Bargain Buys takes great pride in supporting such a noble cause and will continue to strive to raise even more money throughout 2015 and beyond.

Sarah Doyle, Corporate Account Manager at Marie Curie said: “We are ecstatic with the amount Bargain Buys has raised and it will make a huge difference to hundreds of families affected by terminal illness.

“We look forward to the continuation of our very successful partnership this year.”

Chris added: "On behalf of everyone here at Bargain Buys, I'd like to thank our wonderfully generous customers for wholeheartedly supporting our fundraising mission and also wish you all a very happy New Year."

If you'd also like to join us in helping Marie Curie by making a donation, you can do so quickly and easily through their website by clicking here.

Bargain Buys' Chris Edwards saves Christmas for hundreds of kids

We’re beaming with pride here at Bargain Buys HQ, after our managing director Chris Edwards Senior saved Christmas for hundreds of disadvantaged children.

Chris heroically stepped up to help Radio Aire’s amazing charity Cash for Kids with their Mission Christmas campaign. Each year, Cash for Kids make it their task to ensure that thousands of children living in poverty across West Yorkshire wake up with a present to open on Christmas Day.

Lisa Sullivan, charity manager at Radio Aire said: “We had an amazing Mission Christmas and helped over 17,000 children which was our best year ever and it’s been wonderful, emotional and very, very worthwhile.

“Chris Edwards saved the day as we had run out of gifts for the older age range of 9 and over - he did this twice for us!”

Chris initially kindly contributed 100 gifts to the Mission Christmas appeal, but as the deadline for presents was looming, 600 gifts were still outstanding.

It was a fight against time to get the gifts before the 5pm deadline but thanks to Chris this was met with hours to spare.

Lisa explained: “On the day of our deadline Chris very generously invited us to Bargain Buys HQ, where he let us look at the stock and choose some suitable gifts.

“This enabled us to fulfil all of our applications, resulting in 17,037 disadvantaged children in West Yorkshire waking up to a gift on Christmas Morning.

“Without the help and the generosity of our supporters these children were at risk of waking up to nothing on Christmas morning.”

This year Radio Aire has teamed up with Crown Point Shopping Park in Leeds to support Cash for Kids in West Yorkshire.

Local businesses as well as members of the public have all chipped in to make Christmas special for disadvantaged children in the area and here at Bargain Buys we’re delighted to be a part of it.

Chris Edwards said: “I’m really just glad that we could help Cash for Kids with their Mission Christmas campaign, I couldn’t see 600 disadvantaged children go without a gift to open on Christmas Day - the thought of that is simply awful.

“As a family-run business that was born and bred in Yorkshire, it’s important that Bargain Buys stays true to its roots and helps the local community whenever possible – especially when the help is needed so urgently.

“The hard work and passion that everyone at Cash for Kids puts in to making Christmas special and magical for children living in poverty is admirable and I’m happy that we could keep the Christmas spirit alive by giving them a little helping hand.”

Lisa added: "I can't thank Chris Edwards enough for saving the day and really helping us in our hour of need, resulting in us being able to help all the children we had aimed to help this Christmas.

“Mission Christmas is a very special time of the year and is such an emotional campaign. I’m so proud of the great people of West Yorkshire who pulled together to make this our best ever Mission Christmas.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Merry Christmas from Bargain Buys and Marie Curie!

Christmas is finally upon us and as it’s a time of good will and giving we wanted to help our partner charity by taking part in their festive video challenge.

Marie Curie has set its supporters the task of gathering a group of friends together and shouting the famous line ‘It’s Christmaaaas!’ at the top of their voices. The challenge is to film it, post it on Facebook, donate £3 to Marie Curie, and then nominate three other friends to complete the challenge.

Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Bargain Buys said: “Our team here at Bargain Buys were more than happy to get involved and spread a little Christmas cheer to support a fantastic charity like Marie Curie.

“Everyone excitedly wore their festive jumpers for the occasion and gathered outside – they didn’t let the cold put them off!

“It’s great to see that although our company has grown rapidly, it’s retained its close-knit, family atmosphere; this is something that really comes to light when the team gets together for a good cause and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”

Despite the cold, dark December day spirits were high here at Bargain Buys HQ and everyone congregated outside the office to shout the festive phrase.

Sarah Doyle, Marie Curie Corporate Account Manager said: “We’re thrilled that Bargain Buys staff have taken up the #XmasChallenge and wore their best Christmas jumpers to get into the festive spirit.

“The #Xmaschallenge is an easy and fun way to get involved in supporting Marie Curie and terminally ill people across the UK this Christmas and we hope that more people will be inspired to join in on social media.”

You can watch our video by clicking here, and if you feel like giving a little back this Christmas, grab some friends, get yourself involved and join in the fun to support Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Chris added: “We’ve found much enjoyment and fulfilment in supporting Marie Curie throughout 2014 and we look forward to continuing to do so during 2015.

“It’s been a great year here at Bargain Buys and we hope next year will be even better as we continue to grow our brand and raise even more awareness and money for our partner charity.

“On behalf of everyone here at Bargain Buys, I’d like to wish all of our wonderful customers a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”

Bargain Buys and the Albion Foundation team-up to celebrate new store opening in West Bromwich

West Bromwich High Street was a hive of activity this morning (Thursday, 4th December) as we opened our newest store just in time for Christmas.

We were joined at the event by our special guest Mayor of Sandwell Councillor Derek Rowley, who kindly agreed to officially open our brilliant new Bargain Buys store with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Mr Rowley was thrilled to be a part of our latest store opening and said: “Budget shops like the Bargain Buys to open in West Bromwich today are great for our local area because they let the less well-off people in our community save money, as well as giving the opportunity for those who like to shop for a bargain the chance to browse.”

The benefits of our new Bargain Buys store don’t stop there, as the store brings 40 new jobs to the residents of West Bromwich and aims to give the local economy a boost in the right direction.

Mr Rowley added: “The 40 new jobs created by Bargain Buys are of course a most welcome boost for the Sandwell borough, while the new store will also bring an empty town centre shop unit back into good use.”

Here at Bargain Buys we want our new store to benefit the local community as much as possible. That’s why we teamed up with West Bromwich charity the Albion Foundation to help raise awareness of their fantastic cause.

Ben Pollard, marketing co-ordinator at the Albion Foundation said: “It’s fantastic that Bargain Buys have decided to dedicate their store opening to raising money for The Albion Foundation.

“We affect the lives of over 8,000 participants a week and we are hoping to increase this figure with help from donations from generous stores like Bargain Buys.”

Ben braved the cold to come along bright and early this morning and represent the charity at the opening event; volunteers will be on-hand to collect donations over the weekend.

Ben added: “Every donation that we receive will go a long way to helping us to continue our work in the community across Sandwell, Dudley and Worcester.”

There were lots of fantastic people at our big event but we can’t forget to mention our final special guest – Disney’s loveable snowman Olaf.

The Frozen star joined our mascot Bargain Bob to celebrate the new store opening. Together, they proved a massive hit with children (as well as young-at-heart adults) and will be there until Sunday (7th December) to meet and greet fans of all ages. So come along to have fun, meet our guests, support a great local charity and browse our dozens of fabulous departments, brimming with brilliant bargains.

Bargain Buys Gives Hope to Jobless

A partnership between family owned retailer Bargain Buys and government-backed organisation Ingeus has helped 33 long-term unemployed people back into work in the North East of England.

With support from Ingeus, the management team at Bargain Buys were able to interview job-ready people a few days after signing the lease on the 11,000 square foot store at Newcastle Shopping Park. It also meant that the retailer could open its doors to the public just a week later.

Bargain Buys store manager Imogen Buick said: “Although the ability to move quickly is very important to us, it’s also vital that we employ the right people for our jobs.

“That’s where Ingeus really stepped up to the mark, helping us find those with the right skills and motivation to work in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. As a result, 33 people who were previously unemployed now have jobs and are already proving themselves as really good members of our team. Furthermore, the hard work the Newcastle team has put in to the store has led it to being one of our most successful openings to date.”

Nineteen year-old Adam Gibson spent some time working in a shop after leaving school. He said: “Like most people of my age, I want to create a future for myself. This is a great opportunity and I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received from Ingeus and the faith that Bargain Buys has placed in me. I won’t let them down.”

Although 32-year-old Tom Wadsworth spent much of his time over the past two years hunting for a job, he also volunteered in a charity bookstore in Newcastle. He explained: “Being without a job can really sap your confidence, and I was determined not to let that happen to me. I now work on the tills here at Bargain Buys, as well as replenishing stock on the shelves and helping customers find what they’re looking for. I’m really enjoying it and it’s got me back into a routine – I never appreciated just how important that is until now.”

Ingeus is one of the UK’s leading welfare-to-work providers, delivering employability services to support unemployed people into lasting work. The organisation offers a free recruitment service to employers which ranges from CV-sifting to hosting full recruitment days and continues to support new employees for up to two years once they start work, helping employers to increase staff retention.

Hundreds of St Helens shoppers queued to bag a bargain at the new Bargain Buys store which opened Friday 18th July at 10am making it the new brand’s most popular opening to date.

Located on the 10,000 square foot site of the empty Comet store, the new discount store was officially unveiled by the worshipful the Mayor, Councillor Geoff Pearl and the Mayoress as they were greeted by a queue of over 200 people waiting to bag a bargain.

Creating 40 new retail jobs for the town, a record 5,000 shoppers went through the tills across the opening weekend.

Free gifts were given across the opening day including special prizes that were given to the first 100 shoppers. Bargain Buys also donated craft and stationery goodies to pupils from neighboring local school, St.Mary’s and St.Thomas.

Yvonne Brown, store manager at Bargain Buys, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the response we’ve received from local shoppers and this has been one of our busiest openings ever. We’ve had to put in orders for extra deliveries to meet the huge demand for our bargain goods.

“We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support us on our opening weekend and its fantastic to be bringing a new lease of life back in to what was an empty unit.”
